July 19 Day 28 Alaska Trip

How the Hell did this Happen? The whole town of Eureka was out of power this morning – Leroy and I couldn’t even take showers in our hotel! Also, I really don’t function that well without my coffee in the morning. We couldn’t find anyone around in charge to grump at, so we hopped on the bikes and got outta Dodge (a.k.a. Eureka) and rode until we reached Polson for breakfast. Just before town, the speed limit dropped to 35mph, so we slowed down just in time to avoid hitting two big bucks crossing the road – Whew! This was really eerie, because this was almost exactly where Leroy tagged a deer with his motorbike a few years back. He was going from Canada to Mexico riding dirt trails along the Continental Divide. He smashed his bike and had 7 or 8 pins put in his wrist, so he never got to finish his ride. The other weird thing was we met an old guy and his 15 year old grandson at the hotel this morning that were bicycling on that same off-road route from Canada to Mexico. It was all too coincidental. Speaking of coincidental… Remember Gentle Readers, my story of coming north through Montana and having a Vision on the Road to the Sun? It was there I learned my True Indian Name: “Head Smashed in Buffalo Collision”. Well, we are now in Injun Country, and just as we passed Nine Pipes Wildlife Refuge near the FlatHead National Forest, the “Great Spirit” gave me another Sign! Check out the pic of the metal sculpture of the Brave Hunter on his Horse sticking a Buffalo with his Bow. Now look closely at how that Buffalo is giving the Indian the “Stink Eye”!??! Yepper, it was a Sign, awright! It was just about the best “Welcome Home, Boys” that two Road Warriors could ever have! We have seen lots more motorbikes on the road today, especially being on a Sunday, and all. I dunno, there is just something about seeing a Female rider on her own motorbike that is way cool. …Kinda like warmed up apple pie topped with a scoop of ice cream! Lest I digress further, let me continue with saying we are more or less retracing our route through Montana with the exception of going down the east side of FlatHead Lake instead of the west side and we also took some fast freeways coming south. Destination tonight is Dillon, Montana traveling 363 miles.
